What Is A Printer And How Does It Work?
What exactly is a printer? It is a machine that transfers image data from electronic to material form. In other words, it takes the electronic image that may be on your computer, for example, and prints it onto substantial materials, like paper.
Oftentimes Universal Serial Bus (USB) cables connect these devices to computers, while some can connect without wires to a single device or network of computers. Multifunction printers, or MFPs, and all-in-one, or AIO, versions come with the ability to perform many tasks. For example, some may feature internal faxing capabilities, as well as copiers and scanners. Many units are even capable of connecting directly to other devices such as digital cameras, memory cards and flash drives.
The cost of printing large amounts is typically very costly; even for quicker devices, which print roughly thirty pages per minute. The average device works much slower, making high volume production very costly.

The most common types of printers are called toner-based devices. These use heat, pressure and static electricity, also known as the Xerographic method, to put ink to paper. The toner that is used is light sensitive is utilized and placed directly on the materials.
In order to do this, precision lasers must be used. These lasers provide enough heat and pressure to fuse the toner and materials, and they are available as black and white or color devices. Typically, they are most common in offices as they are very expensive.
Another common type of machine is the liquid inkjet model, which uses drops of liquid ink to dye the paper as it transfers the image. Solid ink models, on the other hand, use solid color ink sticks, which are melted. The liquid is then applied to the paper. These are more reasonably priced and the most popular printers for purchase.
Solid ink devices often consume large amounts of energy and require a long time to warm up; however, they provide excellent results and are often used for color materials in offices. Xerox is the only manufacturer of this type of machine.
Lastly, there are both thermal ultraviolet (UV) ink-less printers available for use. These use alternatives to ink-based units, but are not necessarily used at home or the office. UV machines are actually still being developed with the intention that ultraviolet lights will work with special chemicals to produce images on paper. Thermal units are typically used for monochromatic items to make receipts in cash registers and Automatic Teller Machines.
